"Chinese companies have invested over 7 billion in Australia since 2008 and this capital has been a really important contributor to economic growth locally but new investment is slowing," Ferguson said in the report.

"China's duty-free retail market possesses huge potential as people's consumption capacity has increased amid widening market scope," said Guan Lixin, a researcher with the Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation.

"China's ODI is spread evenly across many industrial sectors, particularly those related to the real economy. New investment in relatively high-risk industries like real estate, sports and entertainment is zero, highlighting China's emphasis on sustainable development," she said.

"China will definitely be the largest economy in the world (in the future)," Oschmann said after the launch ceremony in Shanghai. "And this is not only based on China being so big and having such a (huge) population. It is also based on values and cultural elements in Chinese society."

"China will also be added to our watch list for possible inclusion in the FTSE's global bond indexes. The Chinese authorities have continued to introduce reforms designed to open their market to international investors and have transformed their economy into the second largest in the world," Mark Makepeace, CEO of FTSE Russell, said in the statement.
